Hello - We bought a bougainvillea bonsai from home depot yesterday and don't know how to care for it. It is a small one but we would like to grow it. Thank you!

What fun! Since your plant is in a container you'll need to watch for water needs. The soil can dry out quickly so check daily and water as necessary to keep the potting soil from completely drying out. It shouldn't be soggy, either, so you may need to experiment a bit to see how much and how often to water. Give your plant morning sun but shade from hot afternoon sunshine in the summer. As the weather cools off over the fall and winter, it can take all day sunshine. When things heat up in the spring and fall, give it shelter from afternoon sun. Your Bougainvillea can be pruned nearly year round. When trimming, trim branches back a bit farther then the actually length you would like. If you plan to wire any branches take care in wiring older ones as the tend to get brittle with age. It is best to wire branches while they are young and pliable. Aside from watering and pruning, your bougainvillea won't need much care. You can feed it every 4-6 weeks with a half strength dilution of water soluable fertilizer (such as Miracle Gro or Peter's). Enjoy!
