|Why does my Star Magnolia die back and come back each year?

|I'm not sure I understand your question about the plant dying back. Star magnolia is a deciduous shrub so the leaves naturally fall off when the weather gets cold but it is one of the first shrubs to flower in the spring - usually before the leaves emerge. If just the leaves are falling off this time of year, but the branches remain alive and the plant flowers each spring, there's nothing wrong with your star magnolia. It is acting just as it should.
