It's really difficult to get anything to grow under maple trees. Not only do the tree's roots suck up any moisture, they will also compete with the roots of anything you plant for nutrients in the soil. Plus, maples cast lots of shade. I've had success with astilbe, lirope, hostas and Virginia creeper under my maple trees. Give these a try. Hope they work for you.
