montomorency cherry tree is going to have its first winter. Is there any special precautions I should take?

As long as the roots are well established, your cherry tree should tolerate your winter weather without problem. If you find dieback or other winter damage next spring, prune it out. Your cherry tree will respond with lots of healthy new growth. Best wishes with your landscape.
