I have a croton plant. On the leaves, the main vein has shot up from the end of the leaf and developed another very little leaf looking thing? What is it, a flower? Is it usual?

I don't think it is at all unusual for your plant. I'm guessing you have a Mother-Daughter Croton (Codiaeum variegatum forma appendiculatum). You can see why it has this name, with the nodding small leaf sprouting from the top of the bigger leaf joined by the slender stalk. Where they join, is a slight funnel shape. Interesting, isn't it?
