I am considering purchasing mums. How long can I leave them in the containers before they have to go in the ground?

You can keep your mums in containers all year around. I usually use mine as fall decorations on the porch and patio and when they finish flowering I plant them in the garden. You can do the same or you can simply leave them in the containers indefinitely. They will live longer in the ground, though, so you may want to plant them eventually.
