My lawn, over the past few years, is being overrun with a type of grass that I deem undesirable. This grass, as it grows, tends to lean over and take root. Its root system seems very dense but on or close to the surface.

I wonder if it is bermuda or crabgrass? Both spread by rhizomes and will root wherever they can get a foothold. You can find photos of these grasses on the internet. Once you determine which it is, you can find the best controls for it, depending upon your turf type (not all herbicides are safe for all turfgrasses). If it is neither of these, take a sample to your local garden center for help with identification. Helpful folks there can suggest control remedies.
