Deformed leaves can be the result of thrips feeding or might simply be due to the climate. Usually deformed leaves still serve their purposes - to collect and transport the sun's energy back to the roots of the plants. Check your plant thoroughly for signs of insects. If you find none, the problem in due to the environment. Your plants should still flower and produce eggplants. I use compost to mulch my veggies. You can use any organic matter - shredded leaves, pine needles, compost, etc.
