Lily Pads - Knowledgebase Question

Miami, Fl
Question by Mysweetzs

I was told that lily pads would keep mosquitos away if placed in a moat. Moats surround my property and I heard they cost $40 each. Are any of these statements true?

Lily pads won't keep mosquitoes away but moving water, the kind of water that lilies prefer, will keep mosquitoes from breeding in the water. If the water does not move in your moat, you'd be better off floating mosquito repellant discs in the water. These contain Bt (bacillus thuringensis) and are specifically manufactured to kill mosquito larvae. Or, you can simply release some gold fish or feeder fish into the water to control the mosquito larvae.
