|Adding soil isn't necessary. It's natural for some of the feeder roots to venture up to the soil surface where you've had nice, moist, nutrient rich mulch. Just add some new mulch on top of the old. The new mulch will cover over the exposed roots and the plants will be happy. Best wishes with your garden.
