You can improve your soil prior to broadcasting seeds by digging in some compost or other organic matter. I just spread 2-3 inches over the top, rototill it in, then level and broadcast the seeds. This will improve the soil enough to help the grasses take root. There are specially formulated starter fertilizers, usually 18-24-6 and labeled "lawn starter fertilizer". This blend provides nitrogen to help it green up and lots of phosphorous to encourage stem growth. Best wishes with your lawn!
