I am looking for a small evergreen tree to plant in my front yard, preferably something that has a vertical, slender shape. It would get about 6-8 hours of sun a day. I live in Alhambra, CA. Thanks.

Several possibilities come to mind: Crinodendron patagua ? Chilean lily-of-the-valley
tree: Drought tolerant; makes a good screen or patio tree with its upright form and narrow profile; attractive, shiny, evergreen leaves; white bell-shaped flowers.

Cercis occidentalis ? western redbud: California native plant; early spring bloom before leaves appear; attractive reddish seed pods in summer.

Paper birch is another suggestion, Bradford ornamental pear is small but with a rounded canopy, the columnar Siberian crabapple might work for you, as well.

Best wishes with your landscape.
