My backyard grass seems to have just died. The front is green and healthy. The back is mostly tan - little green. What happened??

St. Augustine usually remains green this time of year so I'm not sure what may have happened. Droughty conditions can turn it brown, especially if it has been without water for quite some time. I'd check the sprinkler system to make sure it is working properly. If you had insect or disease problems they would show up in spots or patches, but when an entire lawn turns tan it's usually a water issue. Hope you determine just what the problem is!
