How can I fertilize my two 20' palms without damaging the flowering plants on the base of this palm tree? What do I fertilize the palms with? |
Palms usually need a fertilizer with a 3-1-3 or 3-1-2 ration of nutrients plus magnesium. There are products sold as "palm fertilizer" on the market that match these specifications. Newly planted trees should not be fertilized for at least 3 months after planting. For established trees, you can fertilize lightly 4 times a year. These light fertilizations will probably not damage flowers growing, around the tree. To avoid problem with your flowers or other small plants around the tree, the fertilizer can be put in a series of small holes throughout the area around the tree starting about 3 feet from the trunk. Make holes about 6-8 inches deep and place 1/4 cup of fertilizer in each hole. If you use a slow release product, there may be no need to place it in holes as these products tend not to burn plants.
