I planted english laurel this spring (April-May) and they now have a pest on the back side; black, eating holes. What do I use and when? I have a yearly-around pesticidal oil; can I use that?

Neem oil is safe to use on laurels. I don't know what the pest might be or if it is actually harmful to your laurel so you might want to simply spray them off with a strong stream of water. If they return, you can use your pesticidal oil. Best wishes with your laurel.
