|outside potted basil is showing white and black substance on leaves and branches. 1. how to get rid of and 2. if these substances are washed off can the basil be eaten?

|I can't tell from your description but the white substance could be powdery mildew, a fungal disease. The black may also be a disease. Since we can't tell for sure without inspecting the leaves, I'd pinch them off the plant and toss them in the trash. Eat only the unaffected leaves - for safety's sake!
