Tulip Tree - Knowledgebase Question

The bark/trunk on my tulip tree at the mulch/ground level seems soft. The tree seems healthy, but I am worried that it may not stay that way. I have clay soil. The tree is in a slightly sloped area of the backyard.

I'd be concerned that too much moisture is being held against the bark. Be sure to brush away any mulch material that may be touching the bark and watch how the rain and water from the sprinkler drains. You don't want it sitting next to the bark for any length of time. You may need to excavate a little around the tree to redirect excess water. Hope this helps!
