I live in Rhode Island. My Rhododendron is covered with buds - do I leave these alone for the winter? The shrub was planted in 2009 and needs no trimming.

Rhododendrons develop flower and leaf buds over the summer months for the following spring's floral display. Leaf buds are narrow; flower buds are fat. You can check out the buds to see how many flowers you'll have next spring. By all means, leave the alone so you'll have lots of flowers and new growth next spring. Enjoy!
