What type of plants can I plant under a tree which provides lots of shade and will go nice on a rock patio.

Some low growing groundcover type plants for shade include English ivy, Japanese Spurge, Houttuynia, Asian Jasmine, Liriope, Vinca or Mondo grass. If you want something a little taller with colorful flowers or leaves, plant Lily of the Nile, Leucojum aestivum, Ginger, Toadflax, Butterfly weed, Cardinal Flower, Asparagus sprengeri, Turk's Cap, "Texas Gold" Columbine, Firespike, Philippine Violet, Coleus hybridus "Burgundy Sun", "Plum Parfait", "Eclipse", "Duck's Foot", Blue Plumbago, Persian Shield , Wood Fern, Torenia, Calla Lily or Impatiens.
