How do I prevent mums from separating in the middle?

You can dig and divide your mums each spring to help avoid this problem. Mums develop new stems each spring and that's where the new growth is directed. The old root system dies out, which leaves you with a bare center. So, dig and divide your clumps of mums each spring and each division will develop in to a full and bush plant.
