Do you have to aerate before you reseed? Can i skip that step altogether?

You won't need to aerate unless the soil is compacted. It's not something you usually need to do every year. You can reseed without aerating. Water well after broadcasting the seeds to help rinse them down so they make good contact with the soil and can easily root when they germinate. Good luck with your lawn!
