Because pruning encourages new growth, the best time to prune is in the spring. The exceptions are for flowering shrubs and trees. Wait until after they have finished flowering and then prune them back. If you prune now, in the fall, any new growth that develops won't have time to harden off before winter weather sets in. This new growth can suffer winter kill. So, wait until after flowering has finished to prune landscape trees and shrubs. If the plants do not flower, prune them in the early spring. Best wishes with your landscape.
