How should I prepare new trees (8 to 12" tall) for winter? |
Your young trees will fare best if you follow these simple steps: Water well through the fall and until the ground freezes, sheild the plants from drying winds with a windbreak fence of burlap or other material, and apply fresh mulch (2-6") right after the ground freezes. This should protect them from drying out and from damage due to frost heaving during the winter. If you happen to get heavy snowfall, gently shake it off the trees as soon as possible, since they're more brittle in the winter. Best of luck with your young orchard! |
