The clematis in the photo is 'Bees Jubilee'. While it is possible to split the plant, you may need to dig it and cut through the root system so that each division has both roots and stems attached. Depending upon the size of your plant you may be able to simply set a shovel blade into the plant and dig straight down to get roots and stems toward the outside of the plant rather than having to dig the entire plant up. Fall is the best time to dig and divide. Enjoy your Bees Jubilee!
