Just returning for the winter to FL I find my banana tree has a large bunch of bananas. The wieght of the fruit is taking the plant to the ground. I have propped it up with a ladder. My questions is, when is the correct time to harvest the bananas and where do I cut them from the stalk. Do I wait for them to turn yellow?

thanks, Ann

The whole stalk of bananas is ready to cut when the first hand that formed from the first flowers takes on the familiar yellow look. As long as the bananas are fully formed and have begun to plump out, you can harvest the entire stalk by cutting it from the plant and hanging it in a shady spot. The fruits will continue to ripen and you can cut individual bananas as they turn yellow. Enjoy!
