If you want to plant a Gingko tree, choose a male tree. The female trees drop small, plum-shaped fruit with foul-smelling and mildly toxic skin. Butyric acid makes them smell. IIt also keeps them from rotting and keeps them from being eaten. Butyric acid is also found in rancid butter, Parmesan cheese and vomit. I'd avoid the female trees and choose a male tree. Their fall color is fabulous! Best of all, they don't smell!
