| I have an excellent compost pile and I was wondering if you could recommend a good seed starting recipe which would use my compost. I tried a little before, but it compacted too much and I felt it wasn't suitable to use. It also could have been that the compost wasn't fully broken down. Any suggestions? |
| Seed starting mix is generally of a finer mixture than you can make at home. It should be sterilized, as well, to give the new seeds an opportunity to germinate and grow before they have to battle insects and diseases. You can make potting soil out of your compost, to use in planter boxes and containers. Just mix one part compost, one part sand, and one part regular garden soil together in a wheelbarrow, then use it or store it for future use. Another excellent use for your compost is as a mulch over the top of a garden bed to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Or, you can spread 3-4 inches over the top of a garden bed and mix it into the soil to enrich the planting area. |
