| I would like to mass plant daffodils into a large bed of pachysandra I have in my backyard and wondered if next spring the pachysandra would block the necessary light for the bulbs to emerge. The bed gets plenty of light/sun in the afternoon. What do you think? |
| Daffodils are hearty bulbs and survive fairly well under harsh conditions. I think they would emerge through the pachysandra quite well, at least for the first year or two. The problem lies more in allowing the daffodil foliage to thrive and replenish the bulbs every year; the pachysandra will be serious competition for the nutrients and moisture the bulbs need each spring while the foliage grows and again each fall while the bulbs root. Another consideration is that the daffodil foliage must be allowed to ripen -- which means ratty looking half yellowed leaves on top of the pachysandra -- for weeks. |
