Spring, when new growth is beginning, is the best time to prune your boxwoods. While they can take hard pruning, reducing them by one half might be a little too stressful on your plants. Instead, plan on taking them down by one third this coming spring and by another third the following spring. Managing their size in this manner will protect them from shock due to excessive loss of growth. Best wishes with your boxwoods.
