Acer palmatum (Japanese maple) is more shade tolerant that a lot of other trees. The only drawback is that the color of red leafed Japanese maples will not be as intense in moderate shade as they would be in full or partial sunshine. A few hours of morning sunshine will help keep the leaves the right color so if possible, situate your Japanese maple where it will get at least a little morning sunshine. Hope this information helps you choose just the right spot for your maple.
