I received some bird of paradise plant stalks with very little root matter attached. How do I care for it to assure that it will continue to grow and flower? Do I pot it or let it sit in water for a few days before planting it? Thank you.

Since bird of paradise grows from a thick underground rhizome, you'll want to encourage new root growth by dipping the cut end in rooting hormone and setting it in moistened potting soil. The rooting hormone won't hurt the existing roots but will encourage new root growth. Keep the soil moist but not soggy wet and your new birds of paradise should develop a healthy root system in a few months. Best wishes with your plants!
