|I've just moved into a new house with considerable beds planted with roses bushes, palms and other stuff I have no idea. Shoudl I put down mulch before the first hard freeze? I'm in central Texas.

|You can spread several inches of mulch over the beds now. Mulch helps conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures but it also helps suppress weeds so maintaining a 2-3 inch layer of mulch over the beds throughout the year will mean a lot less weeding. I'd do it now while the weather is still pleasant enough to work outdoors. Best wishes with your new landscape!
