We have winter squash plants tied to a trellis and I was wondering if the plant can support the heavy fruit or should we give it some help by tying the fruit?

The vines can probably support the squash (depending upon the mature size), but I think I'd hedge my bet by tying them up. You can make little hammock or sling-type supports for each squash by cradling each in a length of soft, breathable material. Old pantyhose work well, but if you don't have those, any soft, netted cloth will do. Best wishes with your squash!
