We have removed a huge number of dandelions and have holes in the lawn..what is the best thing to do over winter to assure we get grass not weeds?

I'd rake the bare areas level and overseed, topping the seeds with a thin layer of peat moss or compost. The grass seeds will sprout in 40F temperatures as long as they are kept moist. Or, you can patch the lawn by digging plugs from your existing turf and putting them in the bare areas. Either way, the lawn should winter over well and sprout nicely in the springtime.
