With the exception of your Knockout roses and your weigela, you can prune your perennials down to nearly ground level after the first hard freeze, when the tops are dead. Knockout roses should be pruned in the spring by reducing their height by about one-third. Weigela can be pruned down by about a third, as well. These plants develop flowers on new growth so prune them when new growth is just beginning in the spring. Enjoy your garden!
