We just planted a 4 ft serpentine birch tree. It faces south with no protection from winter wind or snow. Is there something we should do to protect it so it survives the winter?

If your birch tree loses its leaves this fall, it indicates it is hardening off in preparation for winter weather. If it does not lose its leaves and harden off before December, it will be susceptible to cold weather damage. You may want to erect a temporary wind screen to protect it from drying winds. Just drive a couple of stakes into the ground and attach burlap or other material to block the wind. Best wishes with your birch!
