Triming sumac - Knowledgebase Question

St. Paul, Mi

I planted a stand of sumac in my St. Paul yard as a natural fence. That was 4-5 years ago and they are about 5-6 feet and never been pruned. When can I do this? I need to be able to get under them to cut the grass and many brances are in the way. Thanks

Spring is the best time to prune sumac which is probably when you'll next want to mow your lawn. So just enjoy your plants this winter and plan to prune them back in the spring. Best wishes with your landscape.
