Gardenias are perennial evergreens in mild winter climates. In your growing region they can be grown outdoors in the spring and summer months but need to go indoors in the fall to be protected from freezing winter weather. If you'd rather not take your plant indoors for the winter, simply consider it an annual and replace it every spring.
