How do I protect my new banana tree in freezing weather?

The top will die down to ground level when the weather gets really cold. When that happens, cut the stem down to ground level and then mulch over the crown of the plant with shredded leaves, pine boughs or straw. That should be enough to protect the roots from freezing. If so, a new stem will emerge in the spring when the weather warms. Good luck with your banana tree!
