If you plan to use your new cypress tree indoors as a Christmas tree, it should do just fine for about 3 weeks. After that period of time is should be removed from the house. While it is indoors, water as often as necessary to keep the soil moist. Right after Christmas, remove wrapping, lights, price tags, stickers and any other non-organic materials from the cypress tree and its container, and place the plant in a cool, bright location, such as an enclosed patio or porch.

Water the potted cypress tree when the top 1 inch of soil is dry to the touch. Add water until it begins to drip from the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot.

Prune 1 to 3 inches off the tips of each branch with sharp garden pruners in the spring to encourage new growth.

You can keep the tree outdoors in a pot and take it back indoors next Christmas. Before you do, wash the tree with a spray nozzle attached to a garden hose, setting the nozzle to a strong spray, and rinse all the branches. Spray the tree in the early morning so that it has sufficient time to dry before nightfall, or before moving it back indoors.

Best wishes with your tree!
