I have a white powderery moldish stuff on an old Areca Palm. We have cut off all of the old canes, and are trying to revive the tree. It has a lot of old wood at the base that we are trying to remove. What should I treat the tree with for the white powder, and how can I save my tree

What you describe sounds like powdery mildew, which is a fungal disease but it is quite unusual on areca palms. To my knowledge there are no specific controls on palms so you'll need to experiment a little. First try hosing it off with water from the hose. If it returns, try a garden fungicide such as Neem Oil (Rose Defense is a good product). Use it on a hidden area first to make sure it doesn't cause damage to the leaves of your palm. If it works without harming the leaves (wait a week to see what happens!) you can apply it to your entire palm. The disease may be attacking your areca because it is unhealthy. I hope the pruning and washing the fronds off will help. Best wishes with your palm.
