I have a small crabapple tree that some large limbs fell on. It split the tree down the main growth shoot. It is still attached but split. Should i try to tape it together or just cut off split area and spray with tree tar? Will it die?

If the main trunk is split, there are no guarantees that it will mend but it might be worth a try. On the other hand, if it is a small tree, it may be easier to replace it than to hope it heals. If you decide to try and save the tree, don't use tar or other tree wound products. They just get in the way of the healing process. Instead, you can drill a hole and attach a bolt through the trunk, attach a nut and tighten it to hold the two sides together. As the tree grows it will grow over the bolt and the bark should hold the pieces together. Best wishes with your crabapple.
