The avocado cores seem very hard, can it still be composted?

If you put avocado pits into your compost they may very well sprout because of the heat generated by the compost and the moisture that is naturally found in the compost pile! You might want to break the pits in half before adding them. It's true, they are solid and hard, but they are organic matter and will eventually break down so disposing of them in your compost pile is just fine.
