i was wondering if a coconut palm would grow in austin texas and give coconuts normally ? and i would still give her good protection in the winter.

I don't think a coconut palm is a good choice for your gardening region. A coconut palm won't survive your winter weather, even with protection, but there are a few cold hardy palms you might consider. Windmill Palm Trees (Trachycarpus fortunei) are cold hardy to 5 degrees; Mediterranean (European) Fan Palms (Chamaerops humilis) are cold hardy to 5 - 15 degrees. Not quite the same as coconut palms, but you'll still get that palm tree look.
