How do you prevent/get rid of squash vine borers? (preferably organic pest control methods).

If you check your plants regularly you will see the pile of "sawdust" on the ground near the point of entry. If you find it early enough you can carefully slice the stem open (lengthwise) with a knife and either poke at the borer with the knife or otherwise grub it out of the vine. Then bury the damaged part of the vine in the hopes that it will root. It is really important to clean up, remove and destroy all of the vines and plant debris each fall to help prevent an infestation next year.
