Lantana should be cut back by about a third in the spring and again in mid summer after it slows flower production. It isn't necessary to prune it back, but pruning will keep it looking neater and more compact rather than rangey with only a few blooms on the tips of the stems. I regularly cut mine back and it responds with thick, dense growth and lots of flowers from spring through fall.

Butterfly bushes can be trimmed by cutting out some of the oldest canes in the center of the plant and then reducing the size by one half. In some parts of the country it freezes down to ground level every winter and resprouts in the spring. It's perfectly safe to prune yours back that far if yours is overgrown.

Best wishes with your landscape!
