I'd plant an evergreen vine rather than a shrub. Confederate star Jasmine Trachelospermum jasminoides is a good choice; Carolina Jessamine is a fast growing compact vine producing masses of bright yellow flowers in early spring. Climbs by twining; Coral Honeysuckle has blue-green foliage and bright coral-red flowers in spring and summer. Heat and drought tolerant, it climbs by twining so it is perfect for chain-link fences, arbors, or trellises. A final suggestion is Crossvine, an easy to grow vine that provides abundant blooms spring through summer. It attaches itself to most surfaces. 'Tangerine Beauty' is an outstanding variety.
