If raccoons are peeling up your turfgrass, they are looking for grubs. You'll need to treat your lawn for grubs. Once the grubs are eliminated, the raccoons won't be quite so interested in exploring the soil. As long as they find even one fat grub, they will continue to explore. Use a grub control product (such as Grubex or Bayer Advanced Season Long Grub Control) to rid your lawn of grubs. Be sure to follow label directions.
