recently, we had a cold spell lasting about 10 days. I had covered my 2 hibiscus plants, but they look dead now. Should I trim them down or are they hopeless?

I think the root system and main branches will be okay, even with the frosty weather. I'd wait a few weeks before pruning away the winter damage. Pruning encourages new growth so you'll want to make sure all threat of freezing temperatures has passed before pruning. I've pruned my tropical hibiscus down to about 8 inches from ground level and had it come back nicely. You may not need to prune yours back so severely, though. Just prune to remove the damaged foliage and stems and it should rebound. Hope the weather warms soon!
