I was absolutely religious about deadheading petunias this year. Even though I removed spent flowers my plants still would go to seed. What did I do wrong?

Seed capsules will only form where a flower once was, so I'll bet you missed pinching back a flower or two. Petunias are such prolific bloomers, and the seedheads are difficult to find once the petals fall, so it would be easy to miss spent blooms, even when taking time to deadhead on a daily basis. Don't feel bad - just collect the seed your plants have developed, store (when fully dry) in an airtight container in a cool, dark location, and plant them next year!
